MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UIndy men's basketball team (7-2) earned a 68-59 road victory on Tuesday evening, getting back in the win column against Christian Brothers (1-6). It was the programs' first matchup since November 1996.
Â
Kendrick Tchoua led the Hounds with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while
Julian Steinfeld added a game-best 13 rebounds to his eight in the scoring column.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy jumped out to a 40-20 halftime lead, shooting 53.8 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The tone was set from the tip, as Tchoua dropped in a layup on the team's first possession.
Ben Nicoson drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the Greyhound lead to 20-8 after seven minutes, keeping the visiting Hounds hot from the floor.
Â
As good as the offense was in the first half, the defense applied the appropriate pressure which led to transition buckets. The Greyhounds forced nine of the Bucs' 15 turnovers before the break, scoring eight points from the hosts' miscues.
Â
CBU used a 28-12 run in the second half to put the Bucs within four, as Madison Monroe seemingly could not miss from 3-point range. However, a
Josiah Tynes 3-ball capped a Greyhound answer with under five minutes left to help pull away for the eventual win.
Â
The Hounds were dominant in the paint, outscoring the Bucs, 40-20, under the basket. Sixty percent of those points came from big men Tchoua and Steinfeld, who also combined for 18 boards.
