Comeback Falls Short as Softball Splits at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill.—The fifth-ranked UIndy softball team endured its second split in as many days, taking down Quincy University, 4-1, before falling 5-4 in game two. In a rare Monday matchup, the Greyhounds erased a 4-0 deficit late in the capper, but the host Hawks pushed across the deciding run in their final at bat.

GAME 1 | UIndy 4, Quincy 1
The Hounds scored the initial run in the second inning and never trailed. Sydnie Foster drove in her sister Kamrie to get UIndy on the board, while Emily O'Connor added a two-out solo shot in the third.

Two insurance runs followed in the top of the seventh on Sydnee Perry's two-run bomb, which plated K. Foster with her second run of the contest.

Sophomore ace Kenzee Smith (12-2) got the pitching win, fanning 10 Hawks and allowing just one run.

GAME 2 | Quincy 5, UIndy 4
Trailing 4-0 after fifth innings, the Hounds delivered some clutch at bats to claw back to even. Perry connected on her second home run of the day and third of the year to get the Hounds on the board in the sixth.

Maddy Stout followed suit with a solo homer to lead off the seventh – the first of three more timely tallies for the Greyhounds. A one-out single by O'Connor and a double from Gianni Iannantone put two runners in scoring position for Megan Nichols. The freshman came through with one of the biggest hits of her young career – a two-run double to left-center – to knot it at 4-4.

But Nichols would be stranded at second and the Hawks used back-to-back singles and an error to walk off with the win.

Game-two starter Haylie Foster was charged with four runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, while Smith (12-3) came on in relief and was tagged with the loss.
