Hounds Sweep Lady Jackets in Non-Conference Twin Bill

INSTITUTE, W.V.— The No. 5-ranked UIndy softball team upped its win streak to 10 on Saturday, earning victories of 13-0 and 10-4 at West Virginia State. Starting pitchers Kenzee Smith and Haylie Foster combined to allow just four hits and one run in 11 innings, while the UIndy offense generated 29 total runs in the doubleheader sweep.

GAME 1 | UIndy 13, WVSU 0 (5 innings)
Smith flirted with perfection in the opener. Already with a no-hitter on her resume this young season, the Indy native sat down the first 16 Lady Jackets in order before a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth produced the first base runner of the day for the home team. Smith kept the shutout intact, however, amassing 10 Ks and zero walks to up her record to 6-1.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound bats continued to pummel opposing pitchers, racking up multiple runs in each of the first four innings. The top of the lineup was in the mix throughout the game, as leadoff-hitter Maddy Stout and two-hole occupant Megan Nichols combined for five hits, four runs and five RBIs. Stout's two-run triple in the third proved to lone extra-base hit of the game.

The Hounds finished with 15 hits in all, with Tara Williams, Haylie Foster and Sydnie Foster each notching a pair of knocks to fuel the hit parade. Pinch-hitters Grace Mosele and Piper Belden tacked on base hits in the fifth inning.

Eight of the Hounds' nine offensive starters scored at least one run.

FUN FACT
Haylie Foster surpassed 100 career runs scored in game one, joining teammates Gianni Iannantone and Hanna Burris as three of the just 19 players in program history to hit the century mark.

GAME 2 | UIndy 10, WVSU 4
The Hounds pounced first again, hanging a four-spot in the top of the first for the second time today. Stout started things with a hit by pitch and came around just two batters later on an RBI single by Emily O'Connor. Lexy Rees added a sac fly and Sydnee Perry an RBI double to help stake the Hounds to an early lead.

Meanwhile, game-two starter Haylie Foster afforded no such outbursts for the host Lady Jackets. She pitched a 1-2-3 first and went on to surrender just one run in six innings of work, keeping her pitching record pristine at 7-0.

Iannatone and Nichols each had a three-hit game. O'Connor drove in a game-high three runs, including an RBI double in the sixth. All three players scored twice.
