INDIANAPOLIS—The UIndy softball team wrapped up its 2022 campaign Friday at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional 2, falling 5-3 to Findlay in the day's final elimination game. The visiting Oilers scored all their runs in the third inning to move ahead and ultimately hung on for the victory. Findlay advances to Saturday's regional final versus Grand Valley State, while UIndy ends its season with a 48-10 record.
Â
The lose brings a close to the career of a number of talented young women, with
Hanna Burris,
Haylie Foster,
Kamrie Foster,
Sydnie Foster,
Gianni Iannantone,
Amy Kaniewski and
Audrey Sizemore all dressing in the Crimson & Grey for the final time. With a combination of four- and five-year seniors, the group helped the Hounds to a stellar overall record 196-60 (.766) since 2018, a span that included four NCAA Tournament appearances, two GLVC regular season crowns and one GLVC Tournament championship.
Â
Facing a team they
defeated just 24 hours earlier, the Greyhounds jumped in front with a three-run second inning.
Tara Williams led off the frame with her first career postseason homer, sending a 2-0 offering into the left field netting.
Â
A
Hanna Burris walk and a
Sydnie Foster single followed, chasing UF starter Lexie Hilling. Senior Megan Demler
– who just threw a perfect game earlier in the day
– came on in relief, only to surrender a two-run single to
Emily O'Connor and mix in three walks.
Â
But the Oilers answered with a rally of their own in the top of the third, complete with a matching leadoff home run. The big blow came later in the inning when Brooke Radermacher just cleared the left field fence with a three-run homer to give the visitors the lead.
Â
UF tacked on one more in the third, and then Demler settled in to finish her day with five scoreless innings and get the win.
Â
Lexy Rees went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while both Burris and Iannantone earned a pair of walks. Â
Piper Belden added a pinch-hit single in the fifth.
