ST. CHARLES, Mo.—The UIndy women's lacrosse team made history Sunday afternoon, capturing the 2022 NCAA Division II national championship. The No. 3-seeded Greyhounds bested top-seeded East Stoudsburg, 11-9, to secure the program's first-ever national title.
Held at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo., the tournament's Most Outstanding Player nod went to UIndy graduate student
Peyton Romig. She was joined on the all-tournament team by
Sarah Klein,
Abigail Lagos,
Quinn Malcolm and
Mekayla Montgomery.
The championship victory gave UIndy its third NCAA team title overall, joining the Greyhound women's golf teams of 2015 and 2018.
INS & OUTS
Trailing 7-6 late in the third quarter, the Greyhounds sandwiched the final quarter break with a four-goal onslaught from which the Warriors never fully recovered. The Hounds recorded two goals in the final 90 seconds of the third before tacking on two more early in the fourth to build a lead they would not relinquish.
As they've done all season long, Klein and Lagos spearheaded the UIndy offense. The duo combined for seven goals in the championship game, including all four in the aforementioned decisive flurry.
Meanwhile, Romig helped the Hounds completely dominate on draw controls, 20-4. She herself secured 16 draws to add to her two goals and an assist.
