INDIANAPOLIS – Facing a shorthanded UMSL Tritons Squad, the UIndy women's tennis team, freshly ranked No. 7 in the ITA rankings, took a confident 6-1 victory in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opening match.

The No. 10 ranked pairing of
Anna Novikova and
Sofia Sharonova got the Hounds on the board first, taking a 6-2 win. A win by walkover in the No. 3 doubles slot secured the victory for the Hounds, but the Tritons didn't go down without a fight, claiming a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Triton's shorthandedness continued in singles action, forfeiting the No. 6 singles match, giving the Hounds and automatic 2-0 lead. Novikova added onto that with a straight sets victory in the top slot.
Maria Fiacan and
Diane Flament went onto win in straight sets as well, with Flament's coming via two 6-4 sets.
Aside from a Triton victory at No. 4 singles, Sharonova closed out the match, winning in straight sets, giving up only one game.

The Hounds are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m., taking on the Maryville Saints in their second conference match of the weekend.
