INDIANAPOLIS – Lea Cakarevic was the clincher of the No. 9-ranked University of Indianapolis women's tennis' teams 4-2 victory over the west's No. 2-seed Southwest Baptist. The Hounds battled from doubles point loss, going 4-1 in singles action with all four victories coming via straight sets.
The Hounds are now heading to the GLVC Tournament finals, a place they're more than familiar with, looking to make it four titles in a row. The finals will be a battle of the No. 1 seeds, with Drury coming out victorious in a 4-3 down to the wire battle with Lewis to find themselves a spot in the finals.
INS AND OUTS
Doubles was a Bearcat victory, but the Greyhounds fought hard.
Diane Flament and
Lea Cakarevic put the Hounds up early, striving to a 6-1 dub. The Hounds were unable to hold it from there, falling in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles 7-5 and 6-4.
With a new fire lit, the Hounds began a dominant performance out of singles.
Margarita Andreiuk, a newly crowned All-GLVC first teamer, was everything that title predicts, cruising to a pair of 6-1 sets.
Anna Novikova was special as well, avenging an earlier season loss to Paula Ballesteros, winning 6-1, 6-3.
The Bearcats refused to lie down however, fighting past
Maria Fiacan in the No. 3 singles spot to make it 2-2. That left it to the French-connection in Cakarevic and Flament. Flament, in one of the best matches she has played all season, was aggressive early, and it paid off, winning her battle 6-1, 6-0.
Finally, the day ended the way it started, with Cakarevic victorious as she took both sets 6-3 to send the Greyhounds to the finals.
