MARION, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis baseball team saw it's GLVC tournament run come to an end late Saturday night versus the Drury Panthers. The Hounds, having already fallen the day prior to Quincy, battled against Lewis earlier in the day to a 12-4 victory to advance to the semifinal. The Hounds ended their tournament having gone 2-2 with two victories over the Flyers.
GAME 1, UINDY 12, LEWIS 4
The Hounds first contest of the day was a showcase of offensive excellence by the Greyhounds. Jumping out early, it was small ball and advantageous baseball early with
Denton Shepler recording an RBI on a sacrifice bunt for the first run of the contest. Later a wild pitch brought home another. That theme stayed true in the third with
Caleb Vaughn earning a sacrifice bunt RBI in an almost identical situation to make it 3-0.
The Flyer fought back, plating a pair in both the third and the fourth, but it would not be enough as the Hounds kept chugging. Bair's sac fly into right field was the catalyst for a 8-0 scoring run by UIndy. Shepler recorded a double and
Brady Ware a triple in the fifth to add on two more. Ware later added on another extra base hit via a double into left center.
Solid hitting from
Nick Lukac,
Easton Good and Bair ended the game with the final 12-4 score.
GAME 2, DRURY 11, UINDY 4
Much like game one, the scoring got going early between the Panthers and the Hounds. A first inning bomb by Drury was answered by heads up base running by
Drew Donaldson, scoring on a passed ball. Drewby stayed busy after that, roping a double into right center for an RBI to mount a Greyhound lead.
Errors haunted the Hounds throughout the contest, with the first blow coming in the fourth where a pair of runs scored on a Greyhound mistake. Ware got that right back two frames later however, with his second triple of the day.
More misplays by UIndy came to be detrimental in the seventh. A single into left field alongside an error gave the Panthers the advantage, with that ballooning to a 6-3 lead with another Greyhound defensive mistake. The Flyers ended up capping off the game with a five-spot in the top of the ninth. The Hounds attempted a comeback in the bottom of half, but fell short losing 11-4.
