ORLANDO, Fla. – The dominant postseason run by the No. 5-ranked University of Indianapolis men's tennis came to an end by the hands of the two-seed Columbus State Cougars (21-4) in the NCAA semifinal by a score of 4-2. The Hounds end their historic season with a 23-3 record, reaching their ninth-straight NCAA tournament, alongside their 12th GLVC conference championship.
INS AND OUTS
In a rare feat, the Cougars were able to jump on the Greyhounds in doubles. A quick 6-0 victory in the No. 3 slot left it down to the No. 1-ranked pair of
Edgar Destouet and
Tom Zeuch, and the pair of
Matthieu Derache and
Erwan Momo Andre. Destouet and Zeuch did their job, but a break by the Cougars allowed them to clinch the doubles point.
Singles stayed tight as nails. The Hounds, started slow, with the Cougars taking matches at No. 2 and No. 5 before the Hounds could answer.
Louis Picaud out of the No. 3 slot was firery to keep the Hounds hopes alive, winning in straight sets to make it 3-1.
Thomas Mathis, in a second set tiebreaker kept that energy going with this own fire, sending it to a 3-2 score.
Despite gusty tennis from
Nikolaj Talimaa in forcing a tiebreak, the senior from Switzerland fell in the aforementioned tiebreak 7-5, ending the match and the Hounds run at the tournament.
SENIORS CLASS
The Hounds return most of their lineup next season, the only major outlier being long-time force Talimaa who held down several spots over his tenure as a Greyhound. He finished his senior campaign going 15-5 with a 17-6 mark in doubles action.
Alongside Talimaa, they also graduated
Jason Gerweck who leaves with a 10-5 doubles mark his senior season. He also departs as a 2x ITA Scholar-Athlete and a 3x GLVC All-Academic team honoree.
