#8 Wrestling Cruises Past Hawks in GLVC Opener

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 8-ranked University of Indianapolis wrestling squad made a splash to open it's GLVC slate, dominating the visiting Quincy Hawks 44-6, winning all nine matches that were wrestled. Of those nine matches, the Hounds grabbed three falls, three tech falls and two majors.

Alongside the commanding victory, the Hounds had a pair of varsity debuts in Gavin Garcia at 141 and Cade Campbell at 285, both claiming victory.

INS & OUTS
The first match of the day would be the only one where the Hounds did not earn extra points, with Nathan Smith settling for a 12-5 victory to put UIndy up early. From that point the floodgates opened, with Noah Cantu and Garcia going back-to-back majors.

Tech Falls were the next trend in the dual as Jackson Hoover snagged a last second tech at 149 and then Owen Zablocki showed off the moves with a 19-3 tech in the second period.

The Hounds surrendered the match at 165, but three fall and a tech at 197 by No. 2 Derek Blubaugh ended the dual heavily in UIndy's favor.

SPARTAN MAT CLASSIC
While the Hounds clipped the Hawks wings, a cabal of Greyhounds took a trip to North Manchester, Ind. for the Spartan Mat Classic. Of the seven Hounds to make the trip, they claimed six placers, with Owen Butler (184) and Shane Bates (174) landing in second for each of their classes.

In total, the Hounds went 23-10 recording 72 team points. That number was the seventh most a team scored, despite the Greyhounds bringing the least wrestlers to the tournament. In comparison, of the top six teams by team points, only one brought less than 20 wrestlers.

Luke Robards, notably, grabbed a pair of falls in the tournament, only having his run in the consolation semifinal ended by teammate Nathan Conley, who ended his day in fifth. Conley was an extra-point dawg', grabbing two techs and a fall on his day. Logan Farnell was the leader in total matches for the Hounds, using his time in Manchester to his advantage by taking on six different opponents, winning four of five via a form of fall.

Full results from the meet can be found on Track Wrestling.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will continue their dual action, but this time on the road as they will travel south to Crestview Hills, Ky. to battle Thomas More in some non-conference action.
