Greyhounds Go 1-1 on Final Day of NWCA National Duals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – On the second and final day of the NWCA National Duals, the University of Indianapolis wrestling team captured their first victory of the tournament, with a 27-16 win over the No. 20-ranked Ashland Eagles. In their final match, facing also ranked No. 20 Tiffin, the Hounds dropped the affair 30-12. The Hounds return to the circle city having placed 14th with a 1-4 record at this year's National Duals.

In their first match of the day, the Hounds battled No. 20 Ashland, with freshman Nathan Smith getting the Hounds going early with a pin late in the first period. After an Eagle major victory at 133, it was back-to-back falls for the Hounds at 141, 149, and 157, with Brayden Lowery's coming in just 45 seconds.
 

 
Despite the deep Greyhound lead, the Eagles did not quit, finding three decision victories in a row before Phoenix Rodgers calmed the storm with a win at 197. Jay Thompson fought into OT at heavyweight but fell, leaving the match at 27-16.

With their win over Ashland, the Hounds were sent into a battle for 13th-place with Tiffin, who also came into the tournament ranked No. 20. UIndy would rest most of their starters, giving up forfeits at 125 and 141. The Hounds would suffer extra point losses in two other matches. Nathan Conley, Rodgers and Thompson ended up being the only Greyhounds to capture wins, with Thompson's coming via forfeit.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will look to bounce back in a weeks' time when they host Quincy for their first GLVC dual of the year on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. ET in Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. They will also send a group of wrestlers to the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester in North Manchester, Ind. That is set to take place at 10 a.m. earlier that day.
