EINDHOVEN, Netherlands—University of Indianapolis student-athlete
Cedric Buessing came one step closer to achieving his Olympic dream on Friday. Competing at the Eindhoven Qualification Meet in The Netherlands, the Germany native posted an Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) of 4:12.33 in the 400-meter individual medley.
Fresh off winning a national championship and earning three national runners-up at the
NCAA DII Championships last month, Buessing saved his best swim for the open Olympic qualifying meet in Eindhoven. His impressive time is the seventh-fastest 400 IM swim in the world this year, coming in at .17 seconds quicker than the OQT of 4:12.50. He shaved two-and-a-half seconds off his previous personal best while winning Friday's race by a full three seconds.
"Cedric has had this goal as long as I've known him," shared his head coach,
Brent Noble. "He's one of the most diligent workers I've ever known, so he's certainly earned it. He continues to do all the right things and in the right way, so he really makes my job easy as a head coach.
"All of us at UIndy Swimming & Diving are so happy to see him achieve his goal."
A maximum of two qualified athletes per country are allowed in each individual Olympic event. Buessing is currently the only German to have hit the OQT in the 400 IM ahead of the upcoming Paris Games. The 2024 German Swimming Championships are scheduled for April 25-28 in Berlin.
