Women's Soccer Push Past Bearcats for First Win of Season

INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy women's soccer team notched its first win of the season on Friday against GLVC foe Southwest Baptist, 2-1.

The Greyhounds remain unbeaten all time against Southwest Baptist, with a perfect 7-0 record. Tonight is the first time in seven meetings that the Bearcats garnered a goal against the UIndy defense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
This one started with teams trading blows, with two saves from the Bearcats' Cece Alexander in the 11th and 12th minutes by Frances Poulos and Ella Higbie. UIndy's Kendall Ellis grabbed one save of her own as well just three minutes later on a low driven shot by Tamerra Gnatt.

Gnatt's first shot wasn't her only chance of the first half, as her next chance beat Ellis' outstretched arm to give Southwest Baptist the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

But the Hounds continued to push, as just seven minutes later a lofted effort from outside the box from Poulos rang the crossbar before dropping to the feet of Ali Dobbs inside the six yard box, muscling it home to knot the game at one.

The Hounds used that goal to boost their momentum and grab a second goal from their substitute Izzie Wallace in the 42nd minute. Hannah Magruder's lobbed pass over the Bearcats defender to Wallace, who finished with a wonderful first time chip to put UIndy up 2-1.

Ellis came up with two massive saves in the final five minutes, including one on a breakaway from Annabelle Shuler as the clock was ticking to zero.

Neither team created many chances in the second, but Ellis grabbed her fourth and fifth saves in the 65th and 70th of the match to keep the Hounds in front by one. The Greyhounds were able to grind the clock throughout the final stretch and grab the team's first of the season.
