Softball Opens Spring Break Trip in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team endured a pair of losses in their first day of competition at THE Spring Games in Central Florida. The Greyhounds fell, 10-1, to Glenville State before dropping an extra-inning heartbreaker to Hillsdale, 2-1.

GAME 1 | Glenville State 10, UIndy 1
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, starting pitcher Jayden Casebolt helped herself at the plate by driving in a run with a sac fly. But the Pioneers answered with a timely four-spot in the next half inning to retake the momentum and chase Casebolt from the circle.

The Hounds tried to mount one last rally in the seventh. With the top of the order due up, Sydney Oliver and Jocelyn Calvin started the frame with back-to-back singles. Both would get stranded, however, as the Pioneers ultimately sealed the win.

Casebolt took to loss to move to 7-2 on the season. Calvin, Cara Cooper and Brooklyn Willis finished with two hits apiece. As a team, the Hounds outhit Glenville, 11-9.

GAME 2 | Hillsdale 2, UIndy 1 (8 inn.)
Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Eads went toe-to-toe with one of the Midwest's best pitchers in game two. Eads and Hillsdale All-American Joni Russell both went the distance, combining for 23 strikeouts.

With the game scoreless through three full frames, Maya Rodriguez broke the drought with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, scoring Brooklyn Willis with the first run.

After a solo homer by Charger Hannah Hoverman in the fifth, the score remained knotted at one through the end of regulation. The Greyhounds put runners at the corners with two outs in the eighth but came up empty, while the Chargers pushed across the game winner a half inning later with the help of a wild pitch and a productive ground ball.

Eads dropped the 4-5 despite notching her fourth double-digit strikeout total of the young season and walking only two. Meanwhile, Cooper upped her hitting streak to 10 games and has reached base safely in all 18 contests this season.

UP NEXT
The Hounds hit the diamond again tomorrow, facing Saint Martin's and Shepherd in back-to-back contests starting at 10 a.m.
