TIFFIN, Ohio – The seventh-seeded UIndy softball team opened the
NCAA DII Midwest Regional with a 2-1 extra-inning win at No. 2-seed and 17th-ranked Tiffin Thursday afternoon. Following a lengthy rain delay earlier in the contest, the Greyhounds pushed across the game winner in the top of the ninth to tame the host Dragons.
UIndy remains in the winners' bracket and will face the victor of the Lewis and Hillsdale matchup tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET. Tiffin, meanwhile, heads to an elimination game versus the loser of that same contest tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
INS & OUTS
Down 1-0 heading into the fifth, UIndy finally got on the board to tie it up.
Tori Angles and
Brooklyn Willis led off the frame with back-to-back singles, followed by a walk for
Cara Cooper.
Josie Jager pushed across Angles with the equalizer on an RBI fielder's choice.
The score would remain 1-1 through the end of regulation as the game headed into extras. After a scoreless eighth, the Hounds cashed in an unearned run in the top of the ninth to take their first lead of the day. Angles again played the role of table setter, starting the inning with a leadoff walk. She moved up when Cooper was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on an error by the Dragon shortstop.
In the circle,
Cheyenne Eads crafted her sixth consecutive complete-game win. After pitching all 28 innings at the GLVC Tournament last week, the GLVC Freshman of the Year scattered eight hits while fanning seven and walking only one to move to 24-10 on the year.
Angles reached base three time—singled twice and walking once—and scored both UIndy runs. The Greyhounds coaxed six walks in all, including two from Cooper. Jager was credited with a stolen base, while
Sydney Oliver managed a successful sac bunt.
FUN FACT
Thursday's result uppes UIndy's win total in the last four years to an even 200.
Tori Angles,
Jocelyn Calvin and
Jayden Casebolt are now just the second senior class in program history to reach 200 wins in their career.
