CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The No. 9 University of Indianapolis men's tennis team fell to No. 15 Catawba 4-1 on Tuesday. The Greyhounds move to 6-4 on the season.
After a narrow fall in doubles play, Tadeo Gaggiofatto was the only victor in singles plays for the Hounds, with a win at #2 doubles. Every match in singles action was extended to three sets.
INS AND OUTS
Catawba secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Hounds were on the board first after No. 49 Tadeo Gaggiofatto and Zaid Shelbaya triumphed over No. 27 Alen Bill and Santiago Passoni, with a 6-3 final. Meanwhile on court #3, Lorenzo Di Cursi and Jovan Matovic fell 5-7 to Alessandro Valletta and Mateo Berne. The decider in doubles was on court #1, where Asier Ayllon Prado and Matthieu Derache were edged in a breaker at the hands of Luca Bergonzi and Agustin Mastri.
In singles, UIndy fell short in third-set marathons in three of six courts, with the lone win coming from No. 16 Gaggiofatto, who downed No. 43 Passoni 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at #2 doubles.
Catawba plucked a pair of comeback wins from Bergonzi and Ryosuke Inagawa. Bergonzi beat Matovic 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at #4 singles, while Inagawa overpowered Shelbaya 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
At #6 singles, Bill sealed the match for Catawba by defeating Di Cursi 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, clinching a 4-1 win.
