Hounds Power Past Peacocks In GLVC Opener

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – The No. 11 UIndy softball team upped its win streak to 10 with doubleheader sweep at Upper Iowa Saturday. With wins of 13-2 and 3-2, the Greyhounds now sit at 21-1 on the season, good for the third-most wins in program history before a second loss.

Saturday's games were played on the turf field at West Liberty High School in West Liberty, Iowa.

UIndy heads to Quincy University Sunday for a twin bill versus the Hawks. First pitch is schedule d for 1 p.m. ET.

GAME 1 | UIndy 13, UIU 2 (5 innings)
UIndy employed the long ball to pile up the runs in game one. Brooklyn Willis started the day with a leadoff homer, and followed that with another solo shot in her next at bat. Later, Shelby Cook flexed her muscles with a three-run bomb in the third inning.

It marked the first career two-home run game and second leadoff homer of the season for Willis. Meanwhile, Cook's round-tripper was good for her first of the year.

Nine different Greyhounds drew walk, while freshman Christina Stankus led all players with four RBIs.

In the circle, Cheyenne Eads continued her dominant sophomore season. She struck out six and walked zero in four innings, moving her record to 11-0 on the year.

GAME 2 | UIndy 3, UIU 2
Runs were more at a premium in the second game. UIndy strung together three singles in both the second and third frames, pushing across a run in each frame. There the score would stay until the seventh, when Maya Rodriguez's RBI groundout forced in a valuable insurance run.

The host Peacocks managed a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but starter Caitlin Bunte induced a game-ending groundout to preserve the victory.

Bunte (9-1) went the distance in the circle, fanning seven walking none in seven innings of work.

Eads went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice and walking once. Cook and Rodriguez had two hits apiece, with the latter driving in a pair.
