John Spruance enters his second season on the Greyhound bench in 2019-20.

Working with the guards in his first season, Spruance helped elevate Jimmy King to an All-GLVC first-team selection after the Indianapolis native missed the previous season due to injury. CJ Hardaway Jr. was named to the GLVC All-Defensive team, as well, marking the seventh straight season UIndy has placed a player on the prestigious list.

Prior to UIndy, Spruance spent five seasons with Lewis University as an Assistant Coach. His duties included scouting reports, video production, on-court coaching, recruiting, and strength and conditioning.

In his five years with the Flyers, he helped guide the team to an 86-37 record, four GLVC tournaments, two NCAA Tournament,s and back-to-back appearances in the GLVC Tournament Championship game, including the 2016 GLVC Tournament title.

He helped coach nine players to All-GLVC honors, and two GLVC Freshmen of the Year in Max Strus (2015) and Delaney Blaylock (2016). Strus was an All-Region and All-American selection in 2016.
 
Prior to his arrival at Lewis, the Chicago, Ill., native, spent one season at the University of Hawaii. As the video coordinator for the 2010-11, Spruance’s duties included video operations: including film breakdown, coordinating film exchange, creating team highlight videos, advance scouting of opponents, and helping Hawaii players with individual film needs. Hawaii finished with a 19-13 record with an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament.
 
In between his college coaching stops, Spruance served as an assistant coach at Holland High School in Holland MI (2009-10, 11-13). He also coached for the West Michigan Lakers AAU program during his time in Michigan.
 
Spruance received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Hope College in 2010 where he played basketball from 2006-08. He later earned his Master of Science in Recreation and Sport Sciences with a concentration in Coaching Education in January of 2016.
