Monica Alvarez

Former professional swimmer and GLVC standout Monica Alvarez joins the UIndy coaching staff in 2019-20.

Alvarez was a two-time Olympic trials qualifier and three-time World Swimming Championships participant for her native Colombia. Still her country's national record holder in the 100-meter breaststroke, she ended her athletics career in 2016 and began coaching youth and senior groups in Pembroke Pines, Fla., before coming to the Circle City.

As a student-athlete, Alvarez spent two seasons at fellow-GLVC-member Drury University where she was a nine-time All-American. She led Drury to a team national championship in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012. She twice helped the Panthers to second-place showings in both the 200 and 400 medley relays while touching third in the 100 breaststroke, all in 2011.
