Orel Oral GLIAC "Athlete of the Year"

Junior four-time NCAA II national champion <b>Orel Oral</b> (Besiktas-Istanbul, Turkey) led all scorers with 48 points at the GLIAC Meet to lead coach Gary Kinkead's Greyhounds to a third-place finish in the seven-team conference meet. The 27-12 Hounds had placed fourth in their GLIAC debut at the 2001 Meet.

Oral was voted the GLIAC "Athlete of the Year" by league coaches. He shattered the GLIAC record in the 400 individual medley with a 3:59.41 time. Oral met the NCAA II Nationals automatic qualifying standard in winning the 100 breaststroke in 57.70. And, he won the 200 breaststroke with an automatic-qualifying time of 2:03.80.

The Greyhounds' 200 medley relay of Oral, freshman <b>Deniz Monkul</b> (Izmir, Turkey), junior Nate Pheney (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), and sophomore <b>Justin Lowrance</b> (Winona Lake/Warsaw) broke the GLIAC record with a victorious time of 1:34.42.

The 200 free relay of Monkul, Fonseca, Lowrance, and Pheney was victorious in 1:25.11. Lowrance also tied for second in the 50 free (21.49).

The 400 medley relay of freshman <b>Guy Ferber</b> (Givat Shemuel, Israel), Oral, Pheney, and freshman <b>Bruno Fonseca</b> (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) placed second in 3:30.78.

The Hounds" 200 medley relay of Oral, Monkul, Pheney, and Fonseca qualified for Nationals with a time of 1:33.87.

Fonseca tied for sixth individually with 39 points after winning the 50 freestyle (21.07) and the 100 free (46.66).

Monkul prevailed in the 200 individual medley by 1.27 seconds with a time of 1:55.76.

Pheney won the 100 butterfly event in 52.07.

Ferber was victorious in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.74.
