BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Greyhound men's basketball team hung tough, but dropped a 83-46 exhibition game to host Indiana in front of 17,239 at Assembly Hall on Friday night. The Hoosiers, who led by just 11 in the second half, needed considerable time from several of their starters and used a 30-6 advantage in free throw attempts to take the victory.
The Greyhounds hung with the Big Ten power for a good portion of the opening half, but a 15-2 Hoosier run helped spurn an 18-point lead at one point for IU. UIndy matched IU bucket for bucket in the early going as DeAndre Brock's three-pointer tied the score at 12-12.
Following a James Thompkins finger roll to trim IU's slim margin to 15-14, the Hoosiers rattled off a dozen straight points. Thompkins book-ended the run with another layup, two of his team-high 12 points on the night.
Back-to-back Greyhound baskets to end the half brought the IU advantage to 38-24 heading into the locker room. UIndy outshot Indiana in the opening half, hitting on 11 field goals in 24 attempts (11-25 for IU). Despite their size advantage, the Hoosiers operated from the perimeter, attempting 14 triples in the first half (five makes). The Greyhounds attempted just one free throw to IU's 16 in the opening period.
UIndy trimmed the margin to 11 early in the second stanza, but a 23-2 stretch for IU put the game out of reach. 14 of the 15 Greyhounds that dressed saw the floor and a dozen UIndy players garnered double-digit minutes in the team's final tuneup prior to the first regular season.
Myron Jackson added eight points for UIndy, with two second-half triples. D.J. White led all scorers with 17 points, scoring 11 of those from the charity stripe. Reed Ludlow and Tristan Rogers each had four rebounds to lead UIndy.
Indianapolis officially opens the season with a home non-conference matchup with Brescia on Nov. 15. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
