INDIANAPOLIS- Host IUPUI earned intra-city bragging rights with a tough-fought 83-75 exhibition win at the Jungle Thursday night. The Jaguars used an energetic start to build a lead and fended off a Greyhound rally to earn the win.
The Jaguars ran out to a 7-0 lead in the opening two minutes and later built their lead to 22-7, which turned out to be the largest lead of the night. The Hounds got the transition game going with a pull-up jumper from
Keith Radcliff, who led the Greyhounds with 21 points on the night. A fastbreak layup followed by
Tyke Cockerham and the Hounds had a 14-4 run.
With the Jags up 36-28,
Braxton Mills helped whittle the advantage to a bucket, following a
Larry Woods bucket with a pair of free throws then grabbing a steal and converting the layup for a 36-34 game. IUPUI closed the half with four free throws to take a 40-34 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Jaguars again stretched their lead to seven early in the second stanza. Trailing 49-42, UIndy worked on grabbing its first lead. A
Tristan Rogers triple started the run, followed by a Cockerham layup and a long three by Radcliff to give the Hounds a 50-49 advantage. After an IUPUI bucket, Radcliff connected again from the same spot deep at the top of the key giving the Hounds a 53-51 lead.
But, UIndy would hit a dryspell midway through the period and IUPUI ran off a 16-3 run for a 67-56 margin. Two strong moves to the basket shredded the lead to 67-60.
Donald Cloutier drew his defender into the air then finished and Woods added a post conversion.
Cloutier later hit a three and a layup on the next possession as UIndy moved to within four, 71-67. With time dwindling, the Hounds were forced to foul to stop the clock, sending the Jags to the line. With two minutes to play, IUPUI clung to a seven-point lead but hit just 1-of-4 free throws in a key stretch, allowing UIndy to inch back within five.
Cockerham hit a driving bucket and converted the free throw with 52 seconds to play as UIndy tried to mount a comeback. Adrian Moss hit two free throw to make it 78-71 and put the game realistically out of reach. Time ran out on UIndy as the host Jaguars escaped with the 83-75 win.
All five UIndy starters were in double figures scoring, led by Radcliff's game-high 21 and 13 from Woods. Cloutier and Cockerham each chipped-in a dozen while Rogers had 10 for Indianapolis.
The Greyhounds now prepare for the regular season opener, a home contest against Taylor University- Ft. Wayne on Nov. 15. Tip time is slated for 3:00 p.m. from Nicoson Hall.
