INDIANAPOLIS- Quincy escaped with an 84-82 overtime win against the UIndy men's basketball team Thursday night at Nicoson Hall. The Hawks scored seven of the final nine points in regulation to tie it and tallied the first five points in overtime en route to the win.
Braxton Mills got his hands on a rebound and scored the putback to put UIndy (6-12, 1-8 GLVC) ahead for the first time in overtime, 82-81. But, Mookie Pierre made a layup and a free throw as Quincy regained a two-point advantage.
After an empty UIndy possession, Devin Williams was able to tie-up the ball and force a jump ball for a QU (11-6, 4-4) turnover to give the Hounds possession with 16.8 seconds left, trailing by two.
In the closing seconds,
Donald Cloutier double-clutched a three-point attempt that missed and Mills scrambled for the loose ball and the Hounds were able to get a timeout called with a half-second remaining. On the in-bounds pass,
Keith Radcliff was able to spring free on the baseline, but his hurried 15-footer fell off and the Hawks slipped away with the victory.
The night started well for Indianapolis with the home crowd enjoying a 9-1 UIndy lead off the bat. QU rallied to eventually take the lead, going on a 14-2 run and led by as many as 13 in the opening half. Racliff scored the final seven Greyhound points in the first stanza to close the gap to 43-35 at the break.
Quincy used a solid bench effort to combat each UIndy run. Andrew Kueker hit 6-of-8 from three-point range, helping him to 22 points in just 23 minutes off-the-bench. The Hawks' bench outscored UIndy's reserves by a 45-21 margin.
Radcliff's nifty reverse layup tied the game at 46-apiece, but any momentum was squashed when Austin Chapital slammed down a two-handed dunk then fired down another dunk on the next possession. After Kueker's fifth three of the night, the Greyhounds rattled off 10 straight points to take their first lead since the opening period. The lead reached its peak at the 2:25 mark when Cockerham made a jumper in the paint for a 72-65 advantage.
From there, the Hawks scored the next seven points and matched another Radcliff layup with a Billy Baptist lay-in to retie the score at 74 and send the game to overtime.
Radcliff led the Hounds with his 22 points, part of five Hounds in double digits:
Tyke Cockerham (11), #
Sergey Struck (11), Mills 10 and
Tristan Rogers 10. Cockerham finished with seven rebounds and six assists. Radcliff added six steals and Mills led the team with eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds will host Lewis Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. for UIndy's annual "Pack the House" event.
Notes: Prior to tonight, UIndy had won its last five overtime contests, including a 76-70 win over Missouri-St. Louis two weeks ago ... Radcliff's six steals marked a new career high ... Mills scored his 800th career point (807) and cracked into UIndy's top 10 in rebounding (540- 20th).
