INDIANAPOLIS-
Braxton Mills posted a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Greyhounds to a 81-68 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Saint Joseph's Saturday night at Nicoson Hall. The senior helped UIndy grab its second straight win and jump right back into the race for a postseason conference tournament berth.
UIndy (8-13, 3-9 GLVC) led the entire way with Mills winning the opening tip and finishing a layup on the first possession to start his solid night. Another Mills finish later put the lead at its first-half peak of nine. Saint Joseph's (12-8, 5-6) sliced the margin to a single point in the closing seconds of the opening half, but a Devin Williams triple on the final possession of the stanza gave the Hounds a 40-36 lead at the break. In the opening half, UIndy was sharp, hitting on 64 percent of its shots (16-of-25), half from distance (3-for-6) and all of its free throws (5-5).
The Greyhounds took command of the game in the opening minutes of the second half, outscoring the Pumas 16-3 to grab a comfortable 17-point cushion just over three minutes in. The margin was safe until Phillip Collins scored a bucket and a triple to trim the advantage to eight midway through the frame. UIndy responded by scoring the next six points while holding the Pumas without a field goal for three minutes to retain its double-digit margin.
Four different Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by Mills' 15 and complemented by Williams' career-best 14 points.
Keith Radcliff added 11 and
Tyke Cockerham 10 for the victorious Hounds.
Tristan Rogers had nine points and 10 rebounds in a solid effort for UIndy. Collins finished the night with 18 points and Austin Peebles chipped-in 14 for the Pumas.
The Greyhounds take their two-game winning streak to Northern Kentucky next Saturday in their only action of the week. Tip time is slated for 8:00 p.m. Eastern at the brand new Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights, Ky.
Notes: Mills' double-double was the seventh of his career and first since an 11-point, 11-rebound showing in the season finale of the 2006-07 season (vs. Northern Kentucky) ... Radcliff made his only free throw of the night, making him 21-of-his-last-21 dating back to Jan. 10 ... UIndy out-rebounded the Pumas 38-15, tied for the fewest rebounds allowed this season (vs. Temple Baptist, vs. Taylor-Ft. Wayne) ... The Hounds are 7-3 when they win or tie the rebounding battle ... UIndy had to overcome a season-high 24 turnovers in the win, most since a loss to Drury (28) on Jan. 12, 2006 ... Indianapolis, with its two wins this week, inched within 2.5 games of the final playoff spot for the GLVC postseason tournament with six games to play.
