RENSSELAER, Ind.- Host Saint Joseph's College dodged a pair of would-be game-winning buckets by the Greyhounds in the closing seconds of a 74-72 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Richard Scharf Fieldhouse Thursday night. Trailing by two in the game's final trip, the Greyhounds couldn't connect on two different looks and the horn sounded giving SJC a split in the season series with UIndy.
After SJC's Phillip Collins scored a lay-in to put the Pumas up by four with :33 seconds left,
Tyke Cockerham quickly drove the lane and put up a shot that was off the mark, but
Braxton Mills was there to grab the board and score a bucket to slice it to two.
Collins then proceeded to help the Hounds by missing two free throws on the other end and
Donald Cloutier secured the rebound to give UIndy an opportunity to tie or win the game in the final 20 seconds. In the final possession, both
Keith Radcliff and Cockerham had chances but both did not drop and the home team escaped with the slim victory and kept its playoff chances alive in the process.
SJC's (15-11, 8-9 GLVC) win came in part by holding the Hounds to just 28.6 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. UIndy had a one-point lead at halftime and led by as many as seven in the first half, but the Pumas allowed just six Greyhound field goals in the second stanza en route to the win.
UIndy (9-17, 4-13 GLVC) featured a balanced stat sheet all around with Cockerham leading the way in points with 16, followed by 13 from Radcliff and 11 by
Tristan Rogers. Four different Greyhounds had a team-best six rebounds: Rogers, Mills, Cloutier and
Paul Corsaro.
UIndy will close out its 2008-09 season on Saturday, hosting Wisconsin-Parkside in a 3:00 p.m. tip in Nicoson Hall.
Notes: Cockerham set a career best with 12 free throw makes and 14 FT attempts ... Cockerham has gone 19-for-25 from the charity stripe in the past two games.
