CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.-   The University of Indianapolis women's track and field team captured its third Great Lakes Valley Conference track title-- and first indoor championship-- at the 2009 GLVC Indoor meet concluded Saturday.  Kierra Allen was named the league's Freshman of the Year and Scott Fangman was dubbed the GLVC Women's Coach of the Year.

Allen helped UIndy claim four first-place finishes at the meet by winning the 400 meter dash in a time of 57.97.  She also took second in the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.02 and was a member of the Hounds' 4x400 meter relay team that finished second in a time of 4:06.16.

The 4X200 team also took second, finishing with a time of 1:44.65.  UIndy had three of the top five 55-meter dash finishers, highlighted by Shanese McGregor's second-place 7.38-seconds effort.

The Greyhounds were strong in the hurdles, with five UIndy athletes qualifying for the finals in the 55-meter event led by Shirah Bennett's runner-up time (8.65).  Krista Leffers was third and Porsche Jackson fourth in that event.

Emily Schaf took the high jump with her 1.67-meter effort on Saturday, a tenth of a meter better than her closest competitor.  Schaf added a third place in the triple jump, marking 10.77 meters.  Rachel Robinson took fourth in the long jump (5.06m).

The throws events were dominated by Greyhounds as three of the top four spots belonged to UIndy athletes in both events.  In the shotput, Andrea Horban claimed another indoor league title with her 14.50-meter effort.  Amy Schmitz was the weight throw champ after her 18.24-meter toss.  Courtney Kuzmicz added a second place in the weight throw and a fourth place in the shot to supplement UIndy's solid effort.  Horban tacked-on a fourth place in the weight throw and Schmitz took third in the shot helping the Hounds score 48 team points in those two events alone.

It marked the third track title for UIndy after outdoor titles in 2002 and 2004.  The Hounds edged-out second-place Lewis by 16 team points, 186-170.  Missouri S&T took third (100.5) with Southern Indiana fourth (74) and Bellarmine fifth (70).  Wisconsin-Parkside (45.5), Saint Joseph's (38) and Northern Kentucky (10) rounded out the scoring.

The Greyhounds will gear up for the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, set for Houston, Texas Mar. 13-14.
