NCAA D2 Winter Festival

HOUSTON- Senior Amy Schmitz earned her first All-American recognition on the first day of the track and field competition at the NCAA DII Winter Festival, taking fifth in the women's weight throw.

Schmitz hit a mark of 17.51 meters to take fifth overall and earn her first All-American nod. The GLVC conference champion in the weight throw, Schmitz threw her eventual-placing toss during the preliminaries to earn a spot in the finals. Defending national champion Tara Cooper of Ashland again won the event, throwing a 19.77 meter shot for her second title in as many years.

On the men's side, seniors Sam Elmore and Willie Little compteted in the men's weight throw, but did not advance to the final round.

UIndy will have a pair of field athletes competing tomorrow, with Andrea Horban vying for her second national shot put title and Emily Schaf representing the Greyhounds in the high jump.
