ST. LOUIS, Mo.- A 15-5 run over the final minutes boosted host Missouri-St. Louis to a 62-60 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds squandered an eight-point lead and had a few looks to win it in the closing seconds but fell just short, putting their record at 9-5 overall, 3-2 in league play.
UIndy burst out of the gate, hitting on its first five shots to gather a quick 11-3 lead just three minutes in. The Hounds controlled for most of the first half before a 10-0 UMSL spurt gave the home team a slim three-point cushion at 25-22.
The visitors continued to control the play, leading for nearly all of the second stanza as well until a dry spell gave the Tritons enough to overcome and steal the win. The UIndy lead was at eight, 55-47, after a pair of free throws from
Larry Woods with seven minutes remaining.
From there, however, the Greyhounds would go 2-for-9 from the floor the rest of the way. After three straight empty possessions,
Ryan Sims connected from deep, part of his team-high 12 points, to give UIndy a four-point cushion with 4:21 to play.
UMSL (10-5, 4-2 GLVC) retook the lead for the first time in the second stanza on a Zach Redel layup to make it 60-58. Woods countered with a layup to knot the score heading into the final minute.
Nate Blank's three try was off-the-mark with 13 seconds showing and UMSL played for the final shot. Beaumont Beasley was fouled with two seconds left and buried a pair of free throws to put his team up for good, 62-60.
Darius Adams had one final look at the bucket from distance as the clock expired but the Tritons emerged victorious.
Senior Devin WIlliams made all four of his shots from the floor, scoring eight points while chipping-in four steals and four rebounds for the Greyhounds. Blank and Woods each scored 11 points while
DeWann Squires added 10 for UIndy.
The Hounds will finish-off its road swing with a Thursday night tilt at Preseason GLVC East favorite Bellarmine. Tip time is slated for 8:00 p.m.
