On Tap: The UIndy men's basketball team concludes 2010 with a trip to Boca Raton, Fla., for the Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic hosted by Lynn University. The Greyhounds will play Barry on Saturday and the host Fighting Knights on Sunday.
About Barry: The Buccaneers come to Boca Raton from Miami Shores, Fla., and are members of the Sunshine State Conference. Barry was picked to finish eighth in the SSC Preseason Poll after going 20-12 in 2009-10. The Bucs are led by 6-1 junior guard and Ft. Wayne, Ind., native Evan White with 14.7 points and 6-6 senior forward Willie Whitfield with 14.6 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
About Lynn: The host Knights were picked to finish third in the SSC Preseason Poll and already hold a win over then No. 6 Alabama-Huntsville on Dec. 4. Lynn has four players scoring from 12.4 to 11.1 points per game, led by 6-2 senior guard Chris Hall and 6-4 junior forward Jimmy Gaskins with 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Series History: The Greyhounds are 1-1 against Lynn after defeating the Knights in Boca Raton, 75-70, on Dec. 20, 2002. UIndy is also 1-1 against Barry after losing to the Bucs, 44-43, in Lynn's tournament on Dec. 21, 2002.
This will be the Greyhounds first trip to Florida since playing in a tournament at West Florida in Pensacola on Dec. 29-30. UIndy lost to St. Augustine's, 82-79, and then defeated Loyola (La.), 70-53.
Last game: UIndy reached 100 points for the fourth time this season by defeating Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 108-74, at Nicoson Hall. Darius Adams led the way with 23 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals, while Cory Zackery and Wilbur O'Neal each scored 19 points.
Adams' Family: Darius Adams received national recognition by garnering 2010-11 Preseason All-American Honorable Mention from both The Sporting News and the Division II Bulletin. This season, Adams leads UIndy with 20.3 points (5th in GLVC & 37th nationally), 3.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
Player of the Week: Darius Adams earned his first career GLVC Player of the Week award (12/13) after his performances against King and Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Adams averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game.
Light the Lamp: UIndy is second in the country with 95.4 points per game after surpassing 100 points in four of its first seven games for the first time since the 1988-89 season. The last time UIndy scored 100 points or more in at least four games in a season was the 2004-05 campaign, which was also UIndy's last trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Hounds are first in three-pointers (8.71/gm), fifth in field goal percentage (.512) and second in three-point percentage (.386) in the GLVC. Nationally, the Hounds are 17th in FG%, 22nd in three-pointers per game and 44th in 3FG%.
Give it Back: UIndy is forcing 20.4 turnovers per game (2nd GLVC), including 10.43 steals per contest (1st GLVC/26th nationally). Adams leads the league and is ninth nationally with 3.0 steals per game, which has led to 29.8 points off turnovers per game. Nationally, the Greyhounds are seventh in turnover margin (+6.4) and 12th in assist/turnover ratio (1.44).
Free Points: The Greyhounds have been walking a rut to the free throw line with an average of 27.3 free throw attempts per game (143-191), which is second in the GLVC. Adrian Moss is 22-of-26 (.846) and Adams is 40-of-45 (.889) to lead UIndy. Adams is sixth and Moss 13th in FT% in the GLVC.
Clear the Glass: The Hounds are sixth in the conference with a +5.0 rebound advantage and second in offensive rebounds per game (13.71 orpg). UIndy is converting those boards into 16.7 second-chance points per game.
More than an Exhibition: While the exhibition victory over nationally-ranked Tennessee didn't count in the standings, UIndy's victory made quite an impact. Gouard appeared on ESPN First Take on ESPN2 on Nov. 9, a mere 12 hours after the victory, and was also on Fox 59, 1070 The Fan and SportsRadio 1260. Adams, Moss and senior forward Nate Blank were all on Fox 59 and Blank also appeared on 1070 The Fan.
