BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Darius Adams scored 19 points with four rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead University of Indianapolis basketball over Barry, 67-57, in the first game of the Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic at the de Hoernle Center on the campus of Lynn University.
Adrian Moss added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Greyhounds (6-2), while
Wilbur O'Neal notched his first career double-double and the first of the season for UIndy with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
"(O'Neal) is getting better and he knows we're going to ride him because he's the first legit guy we've had since I've been here and he's accepted that challenge," head coach
Stan Gouard said on the 88.7 FM WICR Post Game Show. "I like his progress and his enthusiasm and I'm excited about what the future holds."
This marks the third win in a row for the Hounds and the fifth win in their last six games.
The Hounds picked things up defensively by holding the Buccaneers (2-6) to 37.8 percent shooting (17-45) and 31.8 percent behind the three-point line (7-22). The Greyhounds hit nine three-pointers and all six free throws, even though they didn't attempt a free throw for the first 35:56 of the game, while Barry made 16-of-26 (.615).
Barry was led by Willie Whitfield with 14 points and nine rebounds, but UIndy held Barry's leading scorer, Evan White, to just three points on 1-of-6 shooting.
Leading by one at halftime, 26-25, after a steal and lay-up by Moss just before the horn, the Greyhounds opened the second half with triples by Adams and Moss to grow the lead to seven, 32-25.
UIndy continued to keep up the pressure and pulled ahead by 12, 42-30, after an offensive putback by
DeWann Squires with 14:18 to play. The lead inched to 13 points, 46-33, on an offensive rebound and conversion by O'Neal with 10:41 left in the game.
"I thought we fouled too much in the first half because we didn't do a good enough job of keeping guys in front of us," Gouard said. "We made the adjustment at halftime and our guards did a better job defensively."
The Buccaneers fought back within three, 48-45, but the Greyhounds countered with a 7-1 run to go back up by nine, 55-46, with 5:53 remaining. The Bucs couldn't pull within one possession for the rest of the game.
In the first half, back-to-back scores by Adams put UIndy up, 14-10, before Barry put together a 12-2 run to take its largest lead, 22-16, with 5:51 left. Indianapolis made a rally of its own to close the half on a 10-3 run to take the halftime lead.
UIndy returns to the de Hoernle Center tomorrow night to conclude the event against the homestanding Fighting Knights of Lynn.
