UIndy 3, Missouri S&T 2
INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound softball team rebounded from a 2-1 loss in the opener to post a 3-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader with Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Central Little League in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The loss snapped its school-record win streak but a win in the nightcap improved its league mark to 9-1.
GAME ONE
Megan Russell got the Greyhounds (17-8, 9-1 GLVC) on the board first, singling-in
Jamie Keltz in the third inning for a 1-0 UIndy lead. S&T (10-8, 5-5) took the lead in the top of the next frame as Kristen Drage singled to break-up a string of six straight strikeouts for Russell. Two batters later, Coley Naughton cleared the fence in left field to give the Lady Miners a 2-1 advantage.
With the Hounds still trailing by that score, UIndy mounted a rally in the final inning off reliever Taylor Keal. Russell roped a one-out single to right-center to put the tying run on base, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the threat and stopped UIndy's winning streak at 13 straight.
The homer was a blemish on an otherwise great pitching performance for Russell. She struck-out a season-high 15 batters and allowed just four hits and one walk. Ashley Wallingford picked-up the win in game one, going six innings with just three hits but walked six and escaped trouble the entire day.
GAME TWO
Keltz made sure to give the home team an early lead, homering to lead-off the bottom of the first inning as UIndy grabbed the quick advantage. It would stay there until the fourth when the Hounds added another single run.
Chrissy Stephens drew a one-out walk, followed by an Audry Ernst double and an RBI groundout by
Brooke Johnson.
The Miners scored a pair in the fifth to re-tie the score when it looked like the Hounds may get out of the jam unscathed.
Jennifer DeMotte gave-up a leadoff walk and two infield singles loaded the bases with just one out. DeMotte got a pop-up to third and induced a flyout to right that squirted loose of the right fielder's glove. Two runs would score and the third out came on another runner attempting to give the Miners the lead on the play.
UIndy would manufacture its eventual game-winning run in the bottom of that inning. Keltz led-off with a hit, her fifth time on base on the afternoon. She would steal second and a sacrifice bunt moved her to third with one down. Russell drove her in with a groundout to the right side and the Hounds clung to a slim 3-2 lead.
DeMotte made it hold up, shrugging off a leadoff single in the sixth before retiring the visitors in order in the seventh. She earned her seventh straight win, going the distance and allowing no earned runs on five hits with six Ks and one walk.
The Greyhounds continue league play next weekend, traveling to Missouri-St. Louis Saturday and Southern Indiana Sunday.
