INDIANAPOLIS- Patience was key in a UIndy softball doubleheader sweep over Illinois-Springfield to open the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds coaxed 15 walks on the afternoon and had a pair of big innings to score the bulk of their runs in the home-opening series.
UIndy drew 11 walks in the first game alone, including four in the third inning. That frame saw 13 Hounds come to bat and nine eventually scored. A two-run double by
Carmen Martinez got the scoring underway with RBI walks following by
Kelsey Rummel and
Jamie Keltz.
Jennifer DeMotte was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring another before
Megan Russell drove in two more with her punch shot through the right side of the infield.
Rummel hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score the tenth UIndy run and Russell sqandered just a walk and a hit through five innings of work. She struck out seven to pick-up her fourth win of the season.
In game two, UIndy's big inning was the fourth. After plating a single run on a single and a pair of errors in the second, the Greyhound bats unloaded in the fourth stanza. Three different hitters had two-run hits with
Chrissy Stephens, Audry Ernst and Keltz all getting into the action.
The score would stay 7-0 until the sixth when
Ashley Boxley hit a two-out single to left to score the winner. Another impressive pitching performance occurred in game two as DeMotte threw six innings, striking out five and allowing just three hits in earning her first career win (1-3).
The Greyhounds will now board a plane headed for Florida to play eight games over five days during Spring break. The following weekend, UIndy will get back into league play with doubleheaders at Drury and Rockhurst (Mar. 14 and 15, respectively).
Notes: All nine Hounds scored in game one and eight different UIndy players touched the plate in the second game ... UIndy, playing its second season at the Indiana Central Little League field just off-campus, is now 15-1 all-time on that field, including 14 straight victories.
