INDIANAPOLIS-- In a battle for the top spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings, the host Greyhounds swept Quincy 8-1 and 3-2 at Indiana Central Little League Sunday afternoon. The wins assured that UIndy would grab the No. 1 seed in next weekend's eight-team league championships.
It set-up to be a duel between two of the top pitchers in the league with
Megan Russell (17-7 coming in) facing four-time GLVC Pitcher of the Week Torie Bunzell (24-4). The Greyhounds hung a pair of losses on Bunzell's record and gave the sophomore her first loss since Mar. 19.
Overcast skies and a light drizzle loomed over the field the entire day, but it did not affect Russell, who struck-out 10 in the opener and came back with a seven-K effort in game two. With her seventh punchout in the first game, the senior recorded her 203rd of the season, making her the school's single-season leader in that category.
While Russell was having success in the circle, Bunzell struggled by walking six in just 3.2 innings exiting down 3-0 in the fourth. Her control was off as she threw two wild pitches and hit a batter.
UIndy would pound-out five more runs over the next two innings-- the final pair a two-run homer by
Ashley Boxley-- to run away with the game one win, 8-1.
In game two, the pitching matchup remained the same. Bunzell would get the early help from her teammates on a solo homer in the top of the first inning. It would remain that way until the bottom of the third when
Jamie Keltz turned on a pitch and sent it over the left field fence for a 2-1 Greyhound lead.
After Quincy re-tied the score with an unearned tally in the fifth, it was again Keltz with the heroics. With
Kelsey Rummel on first with a one-out single, Keltz drove a double down the leftfield line, scoring the go-ahead run.
That would be all Russell needed as she set down the side in order the next two frames to clinch the sweep. She allowed just one earned run on four hits and struck-out seven to improve to 19-9 on the season. The senior outdueled Bunzell, who did strike-out 14 batters in game two, but fell to 24-6 overall.
UIndy has earned the No. 1 seed in the postseason league tournament for the first time. The Hounds will play the No. 8 seed in a noon game at East Side Center in East Peoria, Ill. on Fri., May 7.
