INDIANAPOLIS -- Darius Adams led the way with 20 points, while
Nate Blank came off the bench to score 18 as University of Indianapolis men's basketball defeated Missouri S&T, 93-63, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Nicoson Hall for its ninth consecutive victory.
The Greyhounds (12-2, 5-1 GLVC) saw
Wilbur O'Neal and
DeWann Squires add 15 and 13 points, respectively, while junior
Adrian Moss set the table with 10 assists to become the first Greyhound to record double-digit assists in a game since Adams had 10 against Illinois-Springfield (1/4/10) last season.
"Moss was awesome," head coach
Stan Gouard said. "He did a great job of getting guys the ball in a position to score. Ten assists and just one turnover is special and if he continues to do that we're going to be a good basketball team."
UIndy held the Miners (6-8, 2-5 GLVC) to 37.7 percent (20-53) shooting, including 25.9 percent in the first half. The Hounds forced 25 turnovers, including three steals each from Moss, Adams and freshman
Leland Brown. Those turnovers led to a 32-12 advantage in points off turnovers. The Greyhounds also got on the glass to convert 12 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.
"I thought our on-the-ball defense was better than it ever has been," Gouard said.
The Miners were led by Nusrath Khan with 18 points and Mike Malat came off the bench to score 14.
The Greyhounds first seven baskets came off lay-ups to build a 10-point lead, 16-6, after Moss' first career UIndy blocked shot led to a fast break lay-up by Adams 4:58 into the game. The Miners scored the next five points, but the Hounds went on a 21-7 run to push the lead to 20, 37-17, with 4:43 left in the half.
S&T scored a quick three points in a row to lead into the next run for the Greyhounds. O'Neal scored five points in a row to start the 10-1 run in the final three minutes of the half. The last five points, however, were the highlights as Squires soared in for a one-handed tip dunk on a missed three-pointer and Blank nailed a fadeaway three-pointer in the corner as the clock expired to put UIndy up 26, 47-21, at intermission.
Despite making only 4-of-16 three-pointers, UIndy shot 50 percent by making 15-of-22 inside the arc, including 14 baskets in the paint. The Hounds forced 15 turnovers, while committing just two for a 20-0 edge in points off turnovers in the opening half.
"We did a great job in the first half of clamping down on defense and made some great decisions on the offensive end by sharing the ball," Gouard said. "The most impressive part about our lead in the first half was that we had only two turnovers."
UIndy opened the second half on an 11-4 run to go up by 33, 58-25, after an offensive rebound and hook shot by
Cody Sarrazin with 17:32 left to play and cruised from their.
The Greyhounds go back on the road on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. to play at Lewis (10-7, 3-3 GLVC) in a game that will be telvised in the Chicagoland area by Lakeshore Public Television. UIndy then returns home on Monday to play No. 2 Bellarmine (13-1, 6-0 GLVC) at 7:45 p.m.
