INDIANAPOLIS -- Darius Adams led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists as University of Indianapolis men's basketball defeated St. Joseph's, 88-61, in front of 2,357 at Nicoson Hall on Pack the House Night.
Leland Brown scored 13 points and tied his career highs with six rebounds and three steals, while
Wilbur O'Neal needed just 11 minutes to compile 13 points and five rebounds for the Greyhounds (16-4, 9-3 GLVC) against the Pumas (9-11, 5-7 GLVC). Adams' finished the night with 995 career points as he nears becoming the 35th 1,000-point scorer in school history.
The Greyhounds held SJC to 28.4 percent shooting (19-67), which is the best field goal percentage defense of the season for UIndy. The Hounds took advantage to shoot 51.7 percent (31-60) overall and 27-of-42 (.643) inside the arc on the way to 44 points in the paint. The Hounds advantage inside extended to the boards where they out-rebounded the Pumas, 48-35, for 13 second-chance points. UIndy also picked up 10 steals on the way to a 24-13 lead in points off turnovers and 22-4 in fast break points.
The Pumas were led by Jon Smith off the bench with 17 points and five rebounds.
St. Joe scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer, but the lead wouldn't last long.
Adrian Moss made a steal off full court pressure and hit a three-pointer to tie the game and then O'Neal converted an offensive rebound to put UIndy in front for good, 5-3, with less than two minutes off the clock.
The Hounds took a five-point lead to 12, 20-8, with a 7-0 run, but couldn't pull away from the Pumas. UIndy continued to compile highlights as an offensive putback by
Daniel Daudu and fast-break dunk by Adams after a Brown steal put UIndy up 13, 30-17, with 6:35 to play in the half and the margin remained at a baker's dozen at halftime, 39-26.
After letting down with a halftime lead against Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, UIndy kept up the pressure against St. Joseph's. Three-pointers by Adams and
DeWann Squires and free throws by Moss and
Cody Vest pushed the lead to 21, 49-28, 4:02 into the second half.
The lead eventually grew to 32, 80-48, after a fadeaway jumper in the lane by Vest with six minutes to play as UIndy finished its sweep of the Great Lakes Valley Conference North Division and clinched a berth in the 2011 GLVC Tournament.
The Hounds return to the road next week for its longest conference road trip to Drury (15-5, 8-4 GLVC) on Thursday and Rockhurst on Saturday (5-15, 3-9 GLVC).
