INDIANAPOLIS -- After going 1-of-9 beyond the arc in Wednesday's win against Cincinnati-Clermont, UIndy sophomore
Miles Mitchell remained in Nicoson Hall for two hours shooting 600 shots and that effort paid off against Purdue North Central on Saturday.
He made his first six three-pointers on the way to making eight total and scoring a career-high 26 points as the Greyhounds (3-0) prevailed, 96-52, over the Panthers (0-6).
"Everybody was unselfish getting me the ball and they were all good shots and open looks," Mitchell said. "I kind of was in another world where I didn't see hands in my face, I just shot the ball."
"Miles did exactly what I thought he would do because he's a shooter," head coach
Stan Gouard said. "Those guys collapsed on Adrian driving to the bucket and Miles made them pay. He did a great job of knocking down his open shots."
Adrian Moss added a career-high 11 assists and scored 22 points with five steals, while
Mikel Brigham contributed 16 points in his season debut and
Jarrett Hamilton scored 11.
"Adrian is always looking to make those passes," Gouard said. "He did a great job tonight of seeing the floor and I like his leadership right now."
The Hounds made 15-of-24 three-pointers (.625) on the way to shooting 54 percent overall (34-63). Defensively, UIndy forced 36 turnovers by the Panthers, including 21 steals, while only coughing it up 14 times themselves to take a 52-8 lead in points off turnovers.
"We did what we were expected to do. We were supposed to beat this basketball team," Gouard said. "In the first half, we did a great job of getting on top of those guys early. In the second half, we had a couple of mental lapses, but that happens."
PNC was led by Kyle Sanders and Mario Herron with nine points each.
The Panthers took the early lead, 2-0, after Kyle Sanders made two free throws before the game started because
Wilbur O'Neal was assessed an administrative technical foul for dunking in warm-ups. UIndy then won the tip and took the lead, 3-2, after a Mitchell three-pointer. PNC actually came back to score the next five points to take a four-point lead, but then the Greyhounds took over with a 16-0 run that put them up 12, 19-7, with 14:44 to go in the half.
The lead continued to swell as Mitchell connected on his fith and sixth consecutive three-pointers to start the game to put the Hounds up 24, 37-13, barely 10 minutes into the game. He continued to have the hot hand as he drained two more three-pointers to push the lead to 33, 55-22, with 2:31 left in the opening stanza. Moss hit a free throw,
Joe Daniels scored on the fast break off a feed from
Will Smith and Moss nailed a mid-range jumper at the buzzer for UIndy to lead 60-22 at intermission.
The outcome was never in doubt during the second half as UIndy built the lead to as many as 53 points before taking the 44-point decision.
UIndy is off until next Friday and Saturday when they have a pair of in-region games during the Angus Nicoson Basketball Classic. The Greyhounds will play Lake Superior State on Friday, Nov. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and Northern Michigan on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
"We still have some work to do and some execution things we have to take care of, but if we keep working hard and our energy is good, we'll be fine," Gouard said.
