No. 22 Greyhounds overwhelm Rockhurst, 87-52, on Super Bowl Sunday

Darius Adams finished with 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals and Adrian Moss added 14 points, nine assists and three steals to lead University of Indianapolis men's basketball past Rockhurst, 87-52, at Mason-Halpin Field House on Super Bowl Sunday.

Wilbur O'Neal contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three steals for the No. 22 Greyhounds (17-5, 10-4 GLVC) against the Hawks (5-17, 3-11 GLVC).

The Hounds shot 54.7 percent (35-64), while making 11 three-pointers, led by six from Adams. Defensively, the Hounds limited RU to 32.7 percent (16-49) and forced 22 turnovers. The Hounds also controlled the glass with a 40-28 rebounding advantage.

The Hawks were led by Aaron Morrissey and Terance Tatum with 13 points each.

Leading by 11, 48-37, with 16:07 to go in the game, the Greyhounds put the Hawks away with a 21-3 run over the next 8:12 to go up by 29, 69-40, after a 12-0 run keyed by the bench. Cory Zackery scored seven points and Jarrett Hamilton added the other five for UIndy.

The Greyhounds started fast by scoring the first seven points of the game and taking a double-digit lead, 15-4, after a three-pointer by Adams with 14:51 to go. The Hounds stretched the lead to 13, 20-7, after a three-pointer by DeWann Squires and lay-up by Cody Vest with 12:46 to go.

The Hawks came back within six, 20-14, but head coach Stan Gouard called timeout and the Hounds scored six in a row on a lay-up by O'Neal, jumper from Leland Brown and fast-break lay-up by Adams to go back up 12, 26-14, with 8:23 left. Rockhurst wouldn't stay down and climbed within five, 26-21, but UIndy wouldn't let them closer and took a nine-point lead, 39-30, into halftime after Moss drove the lane to beat the horn.

The Hounds shot 53.6 percent (15-28), but couldn't hang onto the ball with 12 turnovers that led to a 13-4 advantage in points for Rockhurst. Defensively, the Hounds held the Hawks to 36.0 percent (9-25), but also put them at the line for 9-of-12 free throws.

The Greyhounds return to Nicoson Hall for three of their final four games. The run begins on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. against No. 7 Southern Indiana in a game televised on Hometown Sports. The Hounds host Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. for the Hall of Fame Game.
