INDIANAPOLIS -- Adrian Moss and
Reece Cheatham combined for 54 points to lead No. 21 UIndy men's basketball past Wisconsin-Parkside, 86-73, in front of 1,515 at Nicoson Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Moss had 28 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals, while Cheatham added 26 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals for the Greyhounds (15-4, 8-3 GLVC) against the Rangers (8-11, 1-10 GLVC). Each hit five three-pointers as Cheatham made his first six shots on the way to 9-of-11 shooting overall, 5-of-6 from distance.
"We played okay and did some good things," head coach
Stan Gouard said. "We made shots. That's the main thing. We did a pretty, decent job for the most part on defense, but we still have some holes to fix going forward. Overall, I'm proud of the effort we made tonight and came out with a 'W'."
Leland Brown added a season-high 12 points as UIndy shot 50.8 percent (30-59) overall, including 12-of-22 three-pointers and 14-of-19 free throws. The Rangers were limited to 39.3 percent (24-61) and forced into 18 turnovers that led to 30 UIndy points, including 11 on the fast break.
"We pressed them a little bit and sped them up," Gouard said. "I thought this team was one that wanted to slow the ball down. Our guys got excited about being able to press. I wanted to generate some kind of energy from the start and pressing does that sometimes."
Parkside scored the first six points of the game until UIndy came alive with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good, 9-6, on a Moss three-pointer with 15:57 left in the half. UWP hung around until another UIndy strung together a 10-2 run to take its first 10-point lead, 29-19, on a Cheatham three-pointer with 8:21 left in the half.
The Rangers came back with five in a row, but UIndy scored seven in a row to go up by 12 and eventually led by 16 at halftime, 52-36, after Moss scored five points in the final 47 seconds of the half.
"They sagged a little bit more in the post than we thought they would and our guards did a good job of finding one another," the fourth-year head coach said. "I thought we shared the basketball today better than we have in a long time."
Wisconsin-Parkside cut its deficit to 11, 55-44, less than four minutes into the second half, but UIndy came back with an 18-8 run to take its largest lead, 73-52, with 9:17 to play after
Cody Vest flew through the lane to tip in a missed shot.
The Rangers made one more run to close within 10, 78-68, with 4:35 to play, but UIndy tightened its defense to hold UWP to five points on 1-of-9 shooting the rest of the way.
Jeremy Saffold led Parkside with 23 points and Colt Grandstaff added 18 points, while UIndy held its leading scorer, Leneal Harris, to seven points on 1-of-10 field goals.
The Greyhounds remain at home to play No. 7 Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. and No. 8 Southern Indiana on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Both games will be televised by Hometown Sports Indiana.
