QUINCY, Ill. -- Quincy's Marshawn Norris hit a three-pointer on the left wing with 0.8 seconds left in overtime to defeat University of Indianapolis men's basketball, 86-83, on Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
UIndy (9-3, 2-2 GLVC) had taken a lead with nine seconds to go in regulation, 77-75, when
Miles Mitchell stole the ball in a full court press with UIndy trailing by one. He fed
Reece Cheatham for a driving reverse lay-up that resulted in a three-point play. Quincy (9-3, 2-2 GLVC) came back down and Courtney Belger's shot from inside the lane was hard off the glass, but Justin Brock tipped in the miss with 0.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
"(Norris) made a tough shot after a bad shooting night (6-16)," head coach
Stan Gouard said. "We had a hand in his face, but he came through in the clutch for those guys.
"We turned the ball over 16 times and gave up 15 offensive rebounds and that's not going to win the game. We were one box out from winning the basketball game."
Adrian Moss had 29 points, career-high seven rebounds and five assists, while
Reece Cheatham tallied his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds for UIndy.
Wilbur O'Neal added 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals before fouling out.
Quincy was led by Brock with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Norris with 17 points.
UIndy shot 46.4 percent (32-69), with seven three-pointers and made 12-of-16 free throws, while the Hawks connected on 43.9 percent (29-66), with eight three-pointers and 20-of-29 free throws. Quincy forced 16 UIndy turnovers that turned into a 24-12 edge in points off turnovers. The Greyhounds countered by turning 16 offensive rebounds into a 21-12 lead in second-chance point.
Trailing by five at halftime, 39-34, and still down four, 64-60, with 8:42 to play, after Cheatham just beat the shot clock with a three-pointer, Quincy rallied in front of a partisan home crowd. The Hawks went on an 11-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 71-66, with 4:18 to go.
The Hounds pulled back within two, 73-71, with two minutes left after a driving lay-up and free throw by Moss. UIndy got the ball back after O'Neal tied up Brock for a steal, but missed a pair of shots. The teams each traded one free throw as QU went up three, 75-72, with 19 seconds left. The Greyhounds needed just five seconds to cut the lead to one as Moss pushed the ball ahead to O'Neal for a lay-up to set up the final seconds.
In overtime, neither team led by more than two points until the final shot in a game that saw 11 ties and 18 lead changes. O'Neal's put back of a miss by
Leland Brown put UIndy back in front, 83-82, with 1:15 to go. O'Neal then fouled out on the next possession with Brock making one free throw to tie with 48 seconds left. UIndy had a chance to go ahead, but
Jarrett Hamilton was called for a charge on a bang-bang play on the baseline with 22 seconds left to give the ball back to Quincy for the game-winning possession.
A three-pointer by Cheatham and fast-break lay-up by O'Neal put UIndy in front, 12-8, five minutes into the game, but it wasn't able to pull away. Still leading, but by just one, 16-15, the Greyhounds strung together a 10-2 run to take a double-digit lead, 27-17, after Moss threw in a baseline floater with 7:25 left in the half.
"(Moss and Cheatham) make the defense stay honest, because you can't help off either guy and they make tough shots," Gouard said. "We just need to continue to spread the ball around for us to be a contender in the GLVC."
Quincy was able to pull back within two, 31-29, but
Miles Mitchell connected on a wide-open three-pointer in the left corner on a baseline inbound-play to push the lead back to seven, 39-32, before the Hawks made two free throws before halftime, 39-34.
UIndy shot 50 percent in the first half (17-34), but were held to only two free throw attempts. The Hounds limited Quincy to 36.7 percent shooting, but six of its 11 field goals were three-pointers and they made 6-of-7 free throws.
The Greyhounds return to Nicoson Hall for three home games in a row starting on Jan. 12 at 7:45 p.m. against Maryville.
