INDIANAPOLIS – Five players scored in double figures led by a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds from
Leland Brown as UIndy men's basketball down UC Clermont, 98-59, at Nicoson Hall on Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds (2-0) shot 57.8 percent from the floor against the visiting Cougars (0-5) from the Cincinnati area, including 8-of-20 three-pointers.
Jared Grady scored a career-high 16 points, while
Quinten Hunter added a career-high 14 points of his own as the UIndy bench accounted for 55 points.
The bigger Greyhounds were able to convert 13 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points, while limiting UC Clermont to only six offensive boards and two second-chance points. UIndy was also able to pick up 10 steals on 19 UC Clermont turnovers that led to 23 points off turnovers and 18 on the fast break.
James Hollowell showed his all-around game with 13 points, game-high seven assists and five rebounds, while
Kendall Vieke scored 10 points.
The Cougars were led by Charles Doss off the bench with 13 points and 10 points from Darwin Tolliver.
The game was tied after the first 10 points were scored and then UIndy started to take over. Hollowell scored inside and then knocked down a three-pointer on the next possession to kick start a 14-0 run that was capped when Hollowell found Grady inside for a lay-up with 15:06 left in the half. The lead eventually grew to 18, 25-7, as the run grew to 20-2 after Grady's steal led to a fast break bucket from Brown with 13:05 to go.
The Cougars came back and pulled within 11, 27-16, with 7:49 to play, but then UIndy put the clamps on them. UC Clermont would only score three points the rest of the half as UIndy ended the first period on a 19-3 run led by Vieke with seven points.
The second half was more of the same as UIndy took a 35-point advantage, 60-25, with 15:46 to go when Grady picked up his second steal and finished the break with a three-pointer on another assist from Hollowell.
Hunter led UIndy's offense in the second half with nine points, while Brown, Hollowell and Grady all had eight. UIndy's three-point shooting was especially impressive in the second half as it made 6-of-11 to hold off the Cougars.
The competition picks up on Saturday for the Greyhounds when they play a regional game against Northwood (1-1). Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. from Nicoson Hall and all fans who attend the playoff football game can get in free to the basketball game with their football ticket stub.
