Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – Reece Cheatham scored 26 points, while
Tyrae Robinson didn't miss a shot from the field with 23 points to lead UIndy men's basketball over Northwood, 79-62, in front of 1,217 at Nicoson Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (3-0) shot 50 percent from the field, including eight three-pointers, while also making 15-of-17 at the free throw line against the Timberwolves (1-2) of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Robinson led the way by making 9-of-10 freebies after hitting all six field goals, including a trio of triples.
"Reece and Tyrae were phenomenal this afternoon," head coach
Stan Gouard said. "Both were able to hit shots early and just kept heating up from there. We're a very tough team to beat if both of those guys are on their game."
James Hollowell added 10 points and seven rebounds as UIndy led on the glass, 34-29, including 13 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. The Greyhounds also had nine steals and were able to get out on the break to the tune of 16 fast break points.
Defensively, UIndy was able to hold the Wolves to 42.9 percent shooting, including 38.9 percent in the second half with 1-of-9 three-point shooting.
The key to UIndy's defense in the first half was its ability to create turnovers as UIndy scored the first 12 points of the game and held Northwood without a bucket for the first 4:55 of the game.
"I really thought we guarded well and created a lot of problems for them early with our pressure," Gouard said. "I liked the way we were able to get after them and make them uncomfortable with the ball."
The Greyhounds continued to pull away and led by 22, 40-18, after Robinson's trail three-pointer on the fast break on a nice find from Hollowell under the basket. Northwood came back with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 12, but five points in a row by Cheatham put the Hounds back up 17, 45-28, with 42 seconds left in the half as they would finish up 15 at the break.
The Greyhounds started the second half with five points in a row to get the lead back to 20, 50-30, on another Cheatham triple with 18:07 to play. The lead grew back to 22, 60-38, on
Leland Brown's score in the paint with 12:19 left when Northwood clawed back into the game with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 11, 60-49, with 8:38 to play.
Jumpers by Cheatham and Robinson pushed the lead back to 15, but the back breaker may have come with 5:30 to play when Northwood's Wes Wilcox and head coach Jeff Rekeweg were called for technical fouls. Cheatham made all four free throws to push the lead to 17.
The Timberwolves were able to get back within 12, but Robinson made 7-of-8 free throws and scored on a fast break lay-up in the final 3:28 to hold NU at bay.
Northwood was led by Wilcox with 15 points and six rebounds, while Darvin Ham scored 12.
UIndy is off for another week until its six-game homestand continues next Saturday, Nov. 24, with another important regional bout against Central State at 3 p.m.
