INDIANAPOLIS –
The No. 11 UIndy men's basketball team improved to 8-0 for only the eighth time in school history by hanging on to defeat Ferris State, 70-62, at Nicoson Hall in the final home event of 2012.

The Greyhounds (8-0) put four players in double figures, led by Reece Cheatham with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Leland Brown added 14 points, while Daniel Daudu had a season-high 12 points and James Hollowell added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs (4-6) were paced by Drew Lehman with 15 points and leading scorer Kenny Brown scored eight points, all in the first half, to be held 10 points below his season average.

The Greyhounds shot 46 percent (25-54) from the floor, while limiting Ferris State to 41.1 percent (23-56). UIndy also converted eight three-pointers to only four by the visitors. Ferris State hung around by making 12-of-18 free throws to only 12-of-22 for the Greyhounds. UIndy turned the ball over just nine times with 15 assists, while Ferris State had a 9-to-16 assist/turnover ratio.

The Bulldogs became the first team all season to out-rebound UIndy, 41-31, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 10 points.

The Hounds led by just two at halftime, 39-37, after holding an early eight-point lead, 10-2. As the second half started, UIndy was able to get the lead to four, but five in a row put Ferris State back in front, 48-47, with 15:25 to play. Cheatham answered with one of his three triples on the next possession, however, to put the Greyhounds back in front.

The lead was brief with Ferris State scoring the next four to regain the lead, 52-50. The Greyhounds had the answer again with an 11-2 run to take a seven-point lead, 61-54, with 8:22 left after Cheatham blocked a jumper by Lehman and then fed Daudu on the fast break run-out.

The Bulldogs responded by holding UIndy scoreless for the next four minutes to close within two, 61-59. Hollowell scored on a post move for UIndy, but Lehman answered for FSU to keep the game at a deuce, 63-61, with 4:02 remaining.

The Greyhounds' defense took over from that point as Ferris State would score only one point the rest of the game. Ferris State was 0-of-3 from the field and committed five turnovers as the Greyhounds were able to hang on. The key stretch came with just under 90 seconds remaining when Tyrae Robinson had his jumper blocked with the shot clock running down. Brennan McElroy was in the right place to corral the loose ball and lay it in just before the horn sounded to push the lead to six, 67-61, with 1:22 to play.

The Greyhounds will have no activity from Dec. 20-26 during the NCAA mandated Division II dead period and then return to practice on Dec. 27 to prepare for the beginning of Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Jan. 3 at William Jewell and Jan. 5 at Rockhurst.

The next home game will be against No. 14 Drury on Jan. 10 at 7:45 p.m. in Nicoson Hall.
