INDIANAPOLIS --
The UIndy men's tennis team improved to 6-0 by winning a regional showdown against Grand Valley State, 5-4, at the UIndy Tennis Center on Friday evening.

The Greyhounds (6-0) were able to win a pair of doubles matches and then split the six singles matches to knock off the ninth-ranked team in the Midwest.

The Lakers (0-3) scored first by winning at No. 2 doubles, but UIndy quickly evened the match as Christian Nikou and Matt Smith won an intense match against Andrew Darrell and Benny Delgado-Rochas, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Preston Swain and Pete Wilson built a 7-4 lead at third doubles, but Josh Kazdan and John McDonald came back to pull within one, 7-6. After the changeover, Wilson served for the Greyhounds and after fighting off multiple break points the UIndy duo prevailed, 8-6, to give the men the lead, 2-1.

Sophomore Trevor Cox, the No. 10 singles player in the Midwest, won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles over Darrell, but the Lakers won at No. 2 and No. 3 to even the match, 3-3. Only the top three positions took the court with both the men and women playing at the same time.

As the match continued, UIndy's depth proved critical as Swain finished 2-0 on the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over McDonald at six singles and junior Alex Poe took the decisive fifth point at No. 5 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Kazdan.

The competition only gets tougher for UIndy as they return to the UIndy Tennis Center on Sunday at 10 a.m. against the top-ranked team in the region and No. 19 in the country, Drury.
