INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Indianapolis men's tennis team won its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, 8-1, over in-state rival St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at the UIndy Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds (10-4, 1-0 GLVC), ranked ninth in the Midwest, started with a pair of 8-1 wins in doubles against the visiting Pumas (11-9, 0-1 GLVC).
Christian Nikou and
Matt Smith won at No. 1, while
Trevor Cox and
Alex Poe took the match at No. 3.
UIndy rounded out the doubles sweep with a comeback victory, 8-6, by
Preston Swain and
Pete Wilson at No. 2 after trailing 4-1 in the early going.
Cox earned the sweep on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Joseph Bomben, while
Caleb Fellers won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 against Seth Arthur.
UIndy closed the day with straight set wins at the final three positions. Smith took a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 against Joseph Scott, while Poe defeated Adam Meeker 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.
Austin Ruddell scored the final point with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win at No. 6 over Carl Fisher.
The Greyhounds host No. 49 Wayne State in an important non-conference regional match on March 30 at 3 p.m. at Center Grove High School and then go on the road to resume conference play at Lewis on April 1 at 1 p.m.
