RENSSELAER, Ind. – The No. 5 UIndy men's basketball team held Saint Joseph's scoreless for the final 3:04 to take the road victory, 79-69, at Scharf Fieldhouse on Monday night.
James Hollowell broke a 69-all tie with 2:46 remaining off a hand-off from
Daniel Daudu on the way to finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyrae Robinson increased the lead to six, 75-69, 80 seconds later after making a steal and then Hollowell fed him back on the right wing for his only triple of the night.
Jared Grady added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Greyhounds (13-2, 5-2 GLVC), while
Reece Cheatham tallied 13 points against the Pumas (4-10, 2-5 GLVC).
SJC was led by Corey Clifton with a game-high 22 points, while Damon Ellison, Jr., added 20.
UIndy shot 49 percent (27-55) for the game and made 9-of-19 three-pointers and 16-of-20 free throws. SJC countered by shooting 48 percent (26-54) with 8-of-20 three-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws.
The Greyhounds held SJC to only two offensive rebounds on the way to a 36-24 advantage on the glass.
Leading by five, 52-47, four minutes into the second half, the Greyhounds started to take control against the Pumas. Over the next four minutes, UIndy went on a 14-5 run to build its lead to 14, 66-52, after Robinson pitched the ball back to Hollowell on the right wing for a long three-pointer with 12:02 to play.
That proved to be the last basket for UIndy for the next 9:16 as the Pumas made their comeback to set up the game's final moments.
The Pumas jumped out to a 7-1 lead that forced UIndy head coach
Stan Gouard to call an early timeout just 2:33 into the game. The Greyhounds rallied and regained the lead, 15-13, on a jumper by
Avery Harmon with 14:22 to play, but the lead was short-lived.
Over less than four minutes, the Pumas scored the first 10 points of a 15-4 run that put them up by nine, 30-21, with 8:04 left in the half. Saint Joseph's had a chance to extend the lead as UIndy went scoreless for three minutes, but the Greyhounds' defense held until Hollowell hit a jumper with 6:40 to play.
That ignited a 19-4 run by UIndy to end the half with the lead, 40-36, after
Joe Daniels converted inside on a feed from Hollowell with 1:39 to play. Hollowell, Harmon and
Jared Grady all hit triples during the run that saw the Hounds hold the Pumas to 3-of-15 shooting and three turnovers.
The Greyhounds shot 48 percent (15-31), including 4-of-11 three-pointers, while SJC was at 43 percent (13-30) and also made 4-of-11 behind the arc.
UIndy returns to Nicoson Hall on Thursday to host McKendree at 7:30 p.m.
