INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 11 UIndy men's basketball team made 8-of-10 three-pointers in the first half and finished with 13 triples on the way to beating McKendree, 100-66, on Thursday night.
The Greyhounds (14-2, 6-2 GLVC) finished 13-of-23 behind the arc and overall was at 61 percent (40-66) against the Bearcats (7-11, 1-7 GLVC), led by freshman
Quinten Hunter with 22 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds.
Freshman
Avery Harmon added 11 points and junior
Jared Grady chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and four assists as the Greyhounds' bench scored 75 of the 100 points.
Cole Adair and
Kendall Vieke each added nine points, while
Joe Daniels had eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.
The Bearcats shot 39.7 percent (23-58), including 13-of-33 three-pointers, and were led by John Steppe with 25 points and seven rebounds and Clinton Happe with 19 points.
UIndy was able to accumulate eight steals and forced 13 total turnovers that led to 19 points off turnovers and 19 on the fast break. The Greyhounds also controlled the paint to a 42-16 advantage in points and 41-24 on the glass.
The Greyhounds scored the first seven points of the game, as former Indianapolis mayor Bill Hudnut looked on, and took a 10-point lead, 13-3, 5:15 into the game on a Harmon three-pointer.
The game was still a nine-point margin, 29-20, with 7:54 to play when the Greyhounds went on a two-minute, 8-0 run with four points by Hunter and four by Daniels. The Bearcats hung around and stayed within 10, 39-29, with less than three minutes to play, but wouldn't score again. The Greyhounds closed the first half on an 11-0 run with the last four points coming from
Reece Cheatham, including a driving reverse lay-up at the buzzer.
Besides the 8-of-10 three-point shooting in the opening half, the Greyhounds made 11-of-19 inside the arc and held McKendree to 1-of-8 inside the arc for an 18-2 lead in points in the paint.
UIndy continued with more of the same in the second half as they went on an 8-2 run in the first 3:07 that was capped by
Brennan McElroy's steal and two-handed dunk to grow the lead to 27.
Competition stiffens for UIndy on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. for Pack the House against No. 8 Bellarmine (14-2, 6-2 GLVC) at Nicoson Hall. The game will also be televised statewide on HTSN.
