LIBERTY, Mo. – The No. 11 UIndy men's basketball team jumped out to a 19-4 lead and never looked back to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams, 80-61, at the Mabee Center on Thursday night.
The Greyhounds (9-0, 1-0 GLVC) shot 51.7 percent (30-58) for the game and were led by
James Hollowell with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Reece Cheatham added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, while
Daniel Daudu chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and two steals against the Cardinals (4-5, 0-1 GLVC).
The Greyhounds dominated on the glass with a 41-28 advantage that led to 16 second-chance points. UIndy also converted 14-of-17 free throws (.824).
UIndy limited the Cardinals to 38.6 percent shooting (22-57), including 6-of-26 behind the three-point line. Dillon Deck led WJC with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Dwight Sistrunk had 12 points and six assists.
William Jewell led early, 4-2, but then it was all Greyhounds as they held William Jewell scoreless for the next five-and-a-half minutes to score 15 unanswered points.
Leland Brown scored the first six of the run that was capped off by
Quinten Hunter's pull-up jumper with 13:20 to play.
The Hounds continued to pull away as they pushed the lead to 22, 32-10, when Hunter corralled an offensive rebound and laid it back in with 7:26 left in the first. The Cardinals came back to pull within 15, but
Brennan McElroy found Hollowell at the top of the key to drain a triple at the buzzer for the halftime margin, 39-21.
Hollowell followed up by draining his first two three-pointers of the second half as in less than 90 seconds the Hounds were up by 26, 49-23. The lead never dropped under 15 for the remainder of the game as UIndy improved to 9-0 for only the seventh time in school history.
GLVC play continues on Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House against Rockhurst (1-7, 0-1 GLVC) at 4 p.m. ET. The Hawks fell at home to Saint Joseph's, 72-70, Thursday night when the Pumas' Damon Ellison Jr., hit a jumper with six seconds left to win the game.
