INDIANAPOLIS – The 11th-ranked UIndy football team broke a late tie with a three-yard touchdown from senior
Klay Fiechter with 1:03 left, giving the Greyhounds a
21-14 win against visiting Truman State Saturday night. The Senior Night victory capped a second consecutive perfect run through the Great Lakes Valley Conference for the Greyhounds (10-1, 7-0 GLVC), who also clinched a probable playoff berth and the program record for wins in the regular season.
Â
Fiechter's game-winner capped a 10-play, 57-yard drive that ate nearly five minutes of the fourth-quarter clock. Truman State got the ball back with just over a minute to go, but an interception by freshman linebacker
Rob Dury sealed the win.
Â
Needing a "W" to earn a share of the GLVC crown, the Bulldogs (7-4, 5-2) led the majority of the first half, thanks in part to 118 rushing yards in the first two quarters. Truman scored on the game's opening drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown rush by junior running back Garrett White.
Â
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds struggled to move the ball early, amassing just three first downs in their first four drives. UIndy broke through late in the half, however, with a touchdown inside the final two minutes. Junior
Greg Johnson tied it with a 44-yard catch-and-run – his fourth TD reception of at least 40 yards this season.
Â
With the score still knotted early in the third, the visitors faced 1st & Goal from the one-yard line but came up empty. UIndy's goal-line stand denied the Bulldogs of seemingly-sure points, as three straight stuffs by the Hounds and a missed field goal kept the score at 7-7. It marked one of four scoreless trips to the red zone for Truman on the night.
Â
UIndy took its first lead with a lengthy 81-yard drive that spanned the third and fourth quarters. The series included two big catches from
Reece Horn – a 23-yarder on 2nd & 19 and a six-yard grab in the end zone.
Â
Later, the Hounds nearly had a second goal-line stand before the Bulldogs tied it at 14-14. At 1st & Goal from the seven, UIndy forced three straight incompletions before White again delivered with a TD catch.
Â
With 5:52 left on the clock, UIndy answered with its game-winning drive. Before Fiechter's forthcoming touchdown, UIndy opted to kick on 4th & 4 from the Truman 27.Â
Scott Miller's season-long 44-yard attempt was true, but an offsides call on TSU forced the Hounds to make a decision.
Â
UIndy took the penalty – and the potential game-winning points off the board – in an effort to salt away more of the two-plus minutes remaining. The choice paid off handsomely, as the Greyhounds called Fiechter's number four times while forcing two Bulldog timeouts in route to cashing in the deciding TD
UIndy now awaits the announcement of the Division II playoff field. The 2013 NCAA D-II Football selection show will air on NCAA.com Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. The Hounds were ranked fourth in the region heading into the weekend; six teams from each of the country's four regions will advance to postseason play.
Notes: UIndy honored its 16 seniors before the game. The group has compiled 33 wins over the last four years, most in any four-year period i nschool history ... Fiechter's TD upped his career point total to 276, passing former Greyhound great Dick Nyers (1952-55) for first all-time at the school … Truman was 0-for-3 on field goal attempts, including one on a block by Andre Smith in the second … TSU's average starting field position was their own 42, 20 yards better than UIndy's … The game's only turnover came on Dury's INT, the final play of the game.
