UIndy opens the 2013-14 season at Nicoson Hall versus NAIA Cincinnati Christian Saturday, Nov. 9.
GREYHOUNDS vs. EAGLES
UIndy has hosted Cincinnati Christian two times in the last four years, averaging 101 points in the two wins. Last November, the Eagles were handed a
94-41 defeat at Nicoson Hall after the Hounds shot 57 percent (38-of-67) from the field and drained 12 three-pointers. Six of those triple came from
Quinten Hunter, who finished with a game-high 23 points.
EXHIBITS A & B
The Greyhounds opened the 2013-14 season with a pair of exhibitons against some of the state's top talent. UIndy started with a trip to No. 22 Notre Dame Monday, Oct. 28, battling the Irish in a
95-69 loss. The Greyhounds led 11 minutes into the contest, but ND finished the half on a 26-5 run to seize control. The Hounds were outscored by just six points in the second half and outrebounded the bigger Irish quad, 47-41, overall. Senior
Reece Cheatham led the way with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Two days later, UIndy traded punches with the Boilermakers of Purdue before falling,
80-73. The Greyhounds' work on the glass again showed up in the stats, matching the bigger Boilers, 43-43, in rebounds. They also out-shot Purdue from the floor, 45 percent to 39. Junior
Joe Lawson came off the bench with a team-high 17 points while adding eight boards, five steals and a pair of blocks.
RETURN TO THE BIG DANCE
Last season, the Greyhounds earned their third consecutive berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, grabbing the sixth seed in the Midwest Regional. The eighth trip in school history marked the second time that the program has made three consecutive appearances (2003-05). This year,, the Hounds will try to make history by returning to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
Head coach
Stan Gouard has been the key ingredient in UIndy appearing in the postseason with three trips as head coach and three during his stint as an assistant. Gouard is now 80-61 at the helm of the Greyhounds with back-to-back 20-win seasons. This marked the first time the program has won 20 games in consecutive seasons since the 1995-96 and 1996-97 campaigns.
RANK & FILE
The Greyhounds were ranked for 10 weeks in a row during the 2012-13 season, peaking at No. 5 in the Jan. 15 edition. That marked the program's best ranking since the Greyhounds were third in NCAA Division II in the Feb. 3, 1997 poll. In the Feb. 12 edition, the Greyhounds were the highest-ranked team in the GLVC (12th) for the first time since 2004. UIndy has been ranked 34 times in school history, including 16 times in the last three seasons under Coach Gouard.
DON'T GET ME STARTED
The Hounds ran off 12 straight wins to start the 2012-13 season. They were among the last four remaining unbeaten teams in Division II and one of only eight unbeaten teams across all NCAA divisions -- none in Division I and four in Division III.
PULLING RANK
Last year, the Greyhounds defeated a number of ranked teams, starting with a 64-62 win at No. 11 Bellarmine, snapping the Knights' 29-game home winning streak -- the longest active streak in D-II at the time.
The Greyhounds also knocked off No. 13 Wisconsin-Parkside, 72-70, at Nicoson Hall after trailing by nine with three minutes to play.Â
Tyrae Robinson knocked down the game-winning free throws in the final seconds to defeat both Bellarmine and Parkside.
UIndy also defeated eventual-national-champion Drury, 72-69, at Nicoson Hall on Jan. 10. No other opponent the rest of the season could solve the Panthers as the Greyhounds were the last team to hold a win over Drury in 2013.
