DECATUR, Ala. – The 15th-ranked UIndy softball team settled for a split in the final day of the Charger Chillout, hosted by the University of Alabama at Huntsville. The Greyhounds (5-1) were edged by Truman State, 2-1, before blasting Augusta State, 11-5.
GAME ONE
Future GLVC-member Truman handed the Greyhounds their first blemish of the season in Sunday's first contest. The Bulldogs (6-0) managed only two hits on the day, but one was a two-run homer in the fifth from sophomore Cate Simon that proved to be the game winner.
UIndy had just three runners touch second base before finally getting on the board in the top of the seventh. A base hit and a walk set the table for senior
Kelsey Rummel, whose two-out single plated
Taylor Russell with the team's only score. But Truman ace Hannah Washburn ended the rally with her 12th and final strikeout of the day, stranding the tying run on second.
Freshman
Morgan Foley took the loss for the Hounds despite fanning eight and retiring the first 13 Bulldog hitters she faced.
GAME TWO
UIndy bounced back with an 11-5 win versus Augusta State. The Jaguars (1-9) took a brief 4-3 lead with three unearned runs in the top of the fifth. but the Hounds broke it open with eight runs in the ensuing bottom half. Sophomore
Casey Williamson scored twice in the frame after capping the scoring with a three-run bomb.
Williamson amassed three runs, three RBI and a pair of walks in the game. Rummel and
Erika Goodwin each scored twice, while
Jennifer DeMotte had two RBI.
The Greyhounds head back to Dixie next weekend for the North Alabama Invitational in Florence, Ala. The invite will feature a similar format to the Chillout, as UIndy will squeeze six games into three days, starting with a match-up with Delta State Friday, Feb. 22.
